In order to manage to whole configuration of produtcs and assets, SCM manages smaller units called configuration Items.

Each and every file or set of files that are part of a product or project can be considered a configuration item in  terms of software configuration management and must be formally controlled.

Every change in a configuration item must be analysed prior to the implementation.
